Dock'Em™ brings three things to component software and to the general consumer market:
(1) Page layout and presentation technology to which we have all grown accustomed. This means that you no longer need two different software programs, one to do page layout and one to do presentations. Dock'Em™ and OpenDoc™ do it all and much more!
(2) A publishing tool for either print publishing or electronic publishing. The world and the documents of publishing is changing rapidly; lots is still being done in print, but how fast is electronic publishing happening? With Dock'Em™ and OpenDoc™, you can now construct and trial test you web site, with all of its links between pages, before writing a single line of html code!
(3) A document construction kit for creating documents as complex and sophisticated as you want, including the embedding of movies, charts, graphs, text editors, graphs, simulators, and all manner of things from the internet. You can now do all of your work within one document; this means you'll never have to travel between applications and windows to get things done!
We, at MetaMind, have, as our top priority, to make it easy for you to create the kind of documents that fit your personal style, using Live Objects™ and other component software, such as Java Applets.
To do this, we have created a product which has many of the page layout and presentation features of full featured applications now on the market. Indeed, because it is OpenDoc,™ compliant, it gives you additional features which those older programs don't have, such as multiple drafts and nested embedding, as you will discover.
Moreover, we have taken pains to add some interesting features to Dock'Em which do not exist in these larger applications, such as the ability to hide the paper, the scrollbars, and the page turner, which are all especially useful when you have embedded one of Dock'Em's own documents inside another Dock'Em document (or inside another Live Object container, such as WAV).
A Two Tiered Product
We intend to keep Dock'Em at about this current level of pricing and sophistication to ensure that everyone has access to the power of OpenDoc. About mid year 1997, we intend to release a rather sophisticated version, currently code-named "Dock'Em Grand", which will include multiple sections, unique techniques for navigating throughout the document, links to other documents and between pages, and so forth. It will always be able to read any document created in Dock'Em™.
The Grand version will target a more specialized audience than the general consumer market.
We hope you enjoy working with Dock'Em™, OpenDoc™, and other Live Objects™ and that we can be of service to you as you work and play with component software.
"Dock'Em™ lets you fully express your imagination in ways never before possible, with unparalled ease and dependability."
